Wednesday was another day out as a woman and it was wonderful.

The Hair

I so liked the Sky large cap wig from Noriko that I purchased another in a different color, Kahlua Blast (medium brown base with honey blonde highlights in the front). It is a far cry from the blond shades I have usually been wearing for over ten years. I needed a change and I am very happy with my new hair color.

(It reminds me of the brunette hair style Janet Leigh wore in the film Bye Bye Birdie, which was a big switch from her previous normal blond color.)

TheDress

My JB by Julie Brown shift dress is not “new.” I bought it over two years ago and wore it once, so it is "like new." And the way it looks on my down-sized body is new!

I thought it looked great, but as I left the house Wednesday evening, my wife commented that the dress looked tight. I sort of agreed with her… it was tight in all the right places.

To accessorize, I wore silver jewelry, nude high heels and a darker shade (Utopia) of Berkshire thigh highs than I usually wear to make my legs look tanned. I also wore my new nude Christian Siriano bag from Payless.

The Mall

I drove to West Farms Mall in West Hartford arriving there at 5 PM. I entered through Macy’s, perused a couple of racks of clothing, then decided to get something to eat. Brio was next door and I enjoyed my previous meal there, so Brio it was.

Not too much to say about dinner. I had an excellent meal, their “Pesto Chicken & Quinoa Salad.” My waiter was respectful, willingly took my photo with and referred to me as “Miss,” so he got a big tip!

I returned to Macy’s after dinner and found the Lacome counter in order to buy a new tube of their Hypnose Drama mascara. It is the best mascara I have ever used and my tube was nearing its end, so it was time to restock.

The Lacome sales rep was very helpful when I asked her about the best way to apply mascara to lower lashes. Forever, I have been using the tip of the mascara wand to lightly graze the lower lashes. It is a hit or miss proposition and the results are OK, but not great.

The sales rep showed me a another way. She took a cotton swab, bent it into a V-shape, applied a little mascara at the bend and said to use the bent swab to apply mascara to the lower lashes. The procedure made sense. When I returned home, I tried it and it worked a lot better than the way I had been doing it.

We conversed a bit more about makeup, she complimented mine and gave me some free samples when she rang me up.

I still had time to kill before the support group meeting began, so I looked through the racks again and found a beautiful white dress that I thought was made of white lace, but upon closer inspection, I saw that it was actually composed of white flower appliqués. I found one in my size and took it to the dressing room to try it on. In the dressing room, I sized up the dress and concluded that it was too small in the bust area and would never fit me, so I did not bother struggling to try it on.

It was time to exit the mall and make the short trip to the meeting hall to present my transwoman makeup tutorial for my old support group.

I will continue my story in my next post.

Wednesday was another day out as a woman and it was wonderful. Here is the rest of the story continued from my previous post.

The Meeting

After dining and shopping at the mall, I drove to the hall where the Connecticut Outreach Society (COS) meets. I was early — about 45 minutes before the 8 PM start time, so I was surprised that there were quite a few vehicles already parked around the hall. Turned out that apizza was served at 7 PM, so most of the attendees showed up early to dine on the cuisine.

There were a dozen attendees. I kind of recognized a few, but the only one I knew for sure was my good friend Diana. However, with my new hairdo, she did not recognize me! LOL

It has been almost seven years since I attended a COS meeting, so I was not surprised that I did not recognize many faces, but I was surprised that there were a few female-to-males in attendance. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but my presentation was intended for a male-to-female audience. The female-to-males would be bored, so I hoped they would at least enjoy the occasional attempts at humor that peppered my presentation.

Before my presentation, there was some organizational business to deal with including the election of officers. The Membership Director slot was open. I mentioned that because of my blog, I often receive e-mails asking for help and whenever the request comes from a person living in area, I always recommend COS as an excellent place to get support. (The organization has been around for almost 30 years, so it is not going to fly by night.)

I don't know how many new members I am responsible for, but since I was already doing some of the work of a Membership Director, I might as well do the whole enchilada, so nominated myself for the Membership Director position. But first, I had to rejoin the organization, so I ponied up the annal membership fee ($0) and I was in. The election was held and, ta da, I am now the COS Membership Director!

After the election, I gave my presentation, which lasted about 40 minutes. It was interspersed with questions and comments and my audience truly seemed to be interested in what I had to say.

After the presentation, a few people came by to speak with me including one attendee in boy mode with whom I had an extensive conversation about our mutual trans lives.

The End

The meeting started breaking up around 9:30 PM, so I said my goodbyes and drove home with a new mascara and a new job! My life is seldom boring and I love it!

Cathy's Initiation

Hi everyone, I'm Cathy from Los Angeles, and I'm so happy to share some of my story, along with photos recently found by my sisters while cleaning out our parents' home back in Pennsylvania.

This first photo is me on the back stoop, dressed up by my older sisters, Donna and Debbie.  It has "Sept 1960 - Willow Rd" written in pen on the back, so I'm two and a half years old (Donna 7, Debbie 5) and a younger sister, Dee Dee, was seven months. Along with our single mother, we lived with our twice divorced Aunt Catherine at her house where four kids shared bedroom.

Our very quirky mother, raised during the Depression, saved everything! So all the girls' old clothes were in two large steamer trunks in the basement. It was those dresses, lacy socks, panties, camis, slips, tights, jumpers and sweaters that introduced me to love all things girly and feminine.

It started as a private dress-up game, but then our mother saw me and passively allowed it, while our Aunt actively encouraged it and participated with my sisters in my femulations. What began as once or twice a week for maybe an hour each time, turned into four, five and six days a week and for an entire morning or all afternoon, even all day and into the evening when they switched me into baby doll PJs or a red plaid flannel granny nightgown with pink fuzzy slippers.

In this photo, they tried a barrette in my short hair, but over time our mother allowed my hair to grow longer, which made looking like a girl even easier.

More to come.

Up in the Air

I started writing this post early yesterday morning before our cookout began. I assumed I would be able to finish the post after the relatives left with full tummies.

Remember the Saturday Night Live skit about the guests who would not leave? It was not quite that bad — we were all having a good time and the cookout did not break up until well after dark.

Being a meticulous housewife, I do not relax until everything was clean and put back in its right place. By then, it was time to slip into a negligee and go to bed. (For the curious, here is a photo that approximates the negligee I wore last night.)

So here I am writing today's post today instead of yesterday, but such is life!

I missed Hamvention this year, but I plan to go to my group's annual conference in September. This year, our conference is in St. Louis. That's 16 hours as Stana drives and when I mentioned the roadtrip at the cookout yesterday, everyone thought I was crazy to drive that distance and that I should fly instead.

I know things have changed dramatically since I the last time I flied a dozen years go. But since I assumed I would not be flying anywhere soon, I have not paid attention to the details. So I began to get detailed and in the process, I found this article on the Fabulous After 40 blog about what to wear for air travel. I also revisited Kim's comprehensive article about flying en femme.

Looks like I will have to adjust my wardrobe for flying in September.

My Store is Closing!

In March, I opened Stana’s Femulate Boutique, an Amazon aStore, where you could purchase items on Amazon that I use and recommend. This was in response to readers who asked how they could support the blog monetarily.

Amazon recently announced that they will be phasing out the Amazon aStores and by the end of October, all the aStores will be gone including mine.

To tell you the truth, business at my aStore was slow and after initially investing a lot of time and effort into the business, I was so disappointed in the results that I stopped wasting my time with it.

Although my aStore is closing, my blog posts will continue to have links to Amazon. If you click on one of those links that takes you to Amazon and you make a purchase, the blog receives a percentage of your payment.

Anyway I want to thank the few who did support my aStore and thus, my blog. But it was hardly enough to give me the incentive to continue much longer.

And so it goes.

Christian Sharia: Modesty police in the the Republican controlled House of Representatives are enforcing a new dress code for women.

The Christian puritans are at the helm, and the bare arms of women must not be seen in the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to a report filed by CBS, sleeveless dresses and blouses worn by women are no longer acceptable attire in the House chamber and the Speaker’s lobby, a location where reporters often wait for lawmakers in order to conduct brief interviews.

A senior GOP source told CBS News that House chamber security and the House Sergeant at Arms are enforcing new rules regarding proper attire for women entering the House chamber and the Speaker’s lobby, effectively becoming modesty police for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Under the direction of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the Republican controlled House of Representatives is enforcing a new dress code for women. No doubt the Taliban would approve.

Fear of Flying

Thank you for the advice and encouragement you readers provided regarding my plans to fly rather than drive to St. Louis in September.

To tell you the truth, I don't need much encouragement to fly as a woman. It is on my bucket list and is something I wanted to do for a long time.

I have no fear of flying, however, I do have a fear of packing for flying.

I am familiar with Big Brother's rules about how to pack, so that is not an issue. The problem is how to pack economically as a woman.

When I go to Hamvention, which is five days en femme, my Subaru is full of luggage... typically, a large suitcase, small suitcase, garment bag, cosmetics toolbox and computer bag. Taking all that on a flight would just about double the cost of my ticket with most carriers.

I could eliminate the cosmetics toolbox by just taking what I really need and I could eliminate the computer bag by carrying my laptop, iPhone and accessories in my big handbag. But how do I compact a large suitcase, small suitcase and garment bag into one piece of luggage weighing less than 50 pounds?

There's the rub.

Being a retro kind of girl, I like the styles ModCloth sells. Yet, I have only purchased one item from them mainly due to size issues (some of the items I liked were not available in my size).

As luck would have it, the ModCloth dress I did buy was a little too big, but not so big that I had to return it. I have not worn it since I lost weight, so it is probably way too big now, but I liked it a lot and may have it taken in once I reach my goal weight.

It seems that I am not the only gurly girl who likes ModCloth as evidenced by this image I found on the Internet recently!

The Girls of Autumn

The "boys of summer" become the "girls of autumn" when they return to school and volunteer to don dresses and high heels for their high school's next womanless event. Whether it be Gender Bender Day, a womanless beauty pageant, Opposite Day, a womanless fashion show, a Cinderfella pageant or even Halloween, there are gurls in civilian clothing willing to put on their frillies for whatever cause comes along, just as Mark Ruth (above) did for the "Miss America" pageant conducted at Wynnewood (Oklahoma) High School in 1974.

Miss Ruth's photo is one of 160 new photos of the girls of autumn uncovered by Starla from online high school yearbooks. I uploaded Starl's new images to flickr where you may view them in two ways:

Method 1: Open one of the Yearbooks sets (A through Z) and you will find the newest uploads at the end/bottom of the set. (The oldest uploads appear at the beginning/top of the set.)

Method 2: Open my photostream and you will find the newest uploads at the top of page 1. The uploads get older as the page numbers get higher with the oldest uploads on the last page.

The contents of the Yearbook A through Z sets are organized according to school name, for example, the photos from Sacred Heart High School would be in the Yearbooks S set.

I hope you enjoy the view. Meanwhile, I am going to slip into a bikini and work on my tan.

Hot As Sun

In honor of the hottest day of the year in Downtown Femulation City, I am passing along some movie trivia from IMDB and elsewhere about the hottest femulation film of its time, Some Like It Hot.

Tony Curtis's voice as Josephine was dubbed by Paul Frees (according to co-writer I.A.L. Diamond). Curtis confirmed it by stating the voice you hear as Josephine is a combination of his voice and Frees'. Curtis says he had trouble maintaining a high-pitched voice for an entire take.

Supposedly when Orry-Kelly was measuring all three stars for dresses, he half-jokingly told Marilyn Monroe, "Tony Curtis has a nicer butt than you," at which point Monroe pulled open her blouse and said, "Yeah, but he doesn't have t*ts like these!"

Upon its original release, Kansas banned the film from being shown in the state, explaining that crossdressing was "too disturbing for Kansans."

A cabaret dancer (a man who played women on stage) tried to teach Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon to walk in heels. After about a week, Lemmon declined his help, saying he didn't want to walk like a woman, but a man trying to walk like a woman.

When Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon first put on the female makeup and costumes, they walked around the Goldwyn Studios lot to see if they could "pass" as women. Then they tried using mirrors in public ladies' rooms to fix their makeup, and when none of the women using it complained, they knew they could be convincing as women. There is a scene on the train recreating this moment.

In 2008, a Californian man who found a little black dress in his closet was stunned when appraisers for U.S. TV series Antiques Roadshow determined it once belonged to Marilyn Monroe. The frock - which Monroe was sewn into for Some Like It Hot, was estimated to be worth $250,000.

One of the few American movies ever given a "Condemned" rating by the Roman Catholic Legion of Decency.

I remember the first time the film appeared on television in the early 1960s. As a budding young femulator, my eyes were glued to the television set while simultaneously trying to feign disinterest so that no one would suspect my affinity for feminine finery.

Jack Lemmon’s son Chris Lemmon appeared in Vegas showgirl drag in an episode of a 1989-1990 television series titled Open House. His femulation was very good, but I have never been able to track down a photo of that femulation.

The actor (Jack Lemmon's son) is dressed as a Vegas showgirl for two episodes of a 1989 television comedy Open House. I had been looking for a photo of this femulation for years and I thank you readers who sent me the link.

The photo does not do Lemmon's femulation justice – he looks like a man in showgirl drag.

I saw those episodes when they were originally televised and in my opinion, he looked a lot better than the photo's depiction. In fact, he looked so hot that his TV wife got very excited about his appearance, started making out with him/her and suggested that he dress as a woman more often!

On the other hand, with the air-conditioner cranking away at full blast, I could have dressed to the nines and lounged around the house the rest of the day.

My Fashion Sense

I have fashion sense.

I can put outfits together and accessorize them. I can also do my makeup and style my hair (wigs). I'm no expert, but I think that for a natural born guy, I do well doing those girly things.

I read and practice a lot to improve my girly skills, but I think there is more to it than that. I think that I took after my Mom.

Mom was a fashion plate. We were not rich by any means; we were lower middle class at best, but Mom always dressed very nicely wearing outfits she sewed herself.

Mom was also beautiful and did not have to wear a lot of makeup. Lipstick, powder, and rouge were the only ingredients in her makeup bag. She also had great legs!

Overall, Mom's look was very classy.

I inherited my fashion sense from Mom. Over the years, I honed my girly skills, but to start, my basic girly skills came from Mom. When I was a little girly boy, I was fascinated watching her do her hair and makeup and sew pretty clothes to wear with beautiful hats and always, with high heels.

I am a high heel maven just like my Mom. In fact, a lot of girls my age have an affinity for high heels because our mothers came from a generation in which high heels were the standard footwear for going out. Similarly, girls my age favor dresses because that is what our mothers wore most of the time.

It is not only me; many of us get our fashion sense from our Moms. Luckily, my Mom had a great fashion sense and a little of that rubbed off on me.

Got Balance?

$

0
According to a story in the Daily Mail, "When it comes to high heels, surprisingly, experts believe that wearing them into our 70s may actually help protect us from falls, by maintaining our sense of balance.

"'Most high heels have a very small surface area to walk on, so you need a good sense of balance and proprioception [a sense of how various parts of the body move relative to each other] to be able to walk in them,' explains Christopher Walker, a consultant in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

"'This means that because of wearing high heels, women have a very good sense of balance.'

"Balance involves the brain processing vast amounts of information from different areas, including the eyes, muscles and balance mechanisms in the ear.

"Heels challenge your sense of balance which, over years, hones these mechanisms.

"If women stop wearing heels, their sense of balance can actually deteriorate, adds Mr Walker, who also works at the Bone and Joint Centre, Spire Liverpool Hospital."

Shopping at Fantasia Fair

I just received an email from a reader who plans to attend Fantasia Fair for the first time. She is excited about being able to shop for clothing while en femme in Provincetown.

Well, I hate to rain on her parade, but clothes shopping in Provincetown during Fantasia Fair is usually disappointing.

Since it is "off-season" or the "end-of-the-season," depending on whom you ask, some of the stores are closed for the year, while the stores that are still open are open on a limited schedule (reduced hours and/or reduced days like Thursday through Sunday or less).

While there may be end-of-the-season sales at the stores that are still open, it is so end-of-the-season that everything is picked over. All that is left is stuff that nobody else wants and not necessarily in sizes for girls like us.

So be forewarned.

Here's "Heels" to Your Health

$
0
0
By Pat Scales, Guest Blogger

Last week Stana posted a blog entry along with a link about a British study that explained how wearing heels was helpful for women, especially older women, to maintain their sense of balance. Because wearing heels reinforces muscle memory and requires a good sense of balance, the practice of wearing heels served to help heel wearers to generally keep a better sense of balance. The end result was a significant decrease in falls.

The premise is that balance requires the brain to process a vast amount of information from various conscious and sub-conscious sources and that wearing heels challenges those internal brain mechanisms that over time helps maintain a better sense of balance. One of the major problems with aging is falling with fractured hips or other untoward consequences. As such, improving balance by wearing heels is consistent with good health and could even save someone for a severe injury or premature death. The study concluded that women's sense of balance deteriorates if they stop wearing heels.

I can also advise of other health advantages of wearing heels. About 30 years ago, I suffered a bad fall when a ladder broke and I dropped about eight feet. I suffered herniated and bulging disks through my entire lower back. At the time, skiing was a favorite sport, but for two years after the fall, I did not ski.

Finally, I decided to risk a day sliding down a snowy mountain. Amazingly, after a day in ski boots, my back felt much better. After a few more outings I realized that the ski boot raised my heel and pressed my knees forward. This position change, identical to that of wearing heels, served to change the architecture of my low back and alleviated the stress on this part of my body.

I found that by wearing heels as often as possible, I was able to control and eliminate much of my lower back pain. Standing flat footed, such as in line or just hanging around with others, resulted in a weak and painful back. My solution is to wear heels to help back pain.

From time to time, I also suffer from heel spurs (plantar fasciitis).  Typical treatment would be a painful shot of cortisone, but this cannot be done too often. My podiatrist said that in addition to doing exercises, I should wear shoes with a heel. He suggested 1.5 to 2 inches.

While most of my guy shoes are still pretty flat, I do wear my 3-inch pumps as often as possible and they have a wonderfully positive effect of my heel spur pain. My heel spurs do not hurt while wearing high heels and for a considerable period  of time after taking off my heels. Being flat footed or wearing flat shoes is bad for my heel spur pain.

Finally, I am happy to report that wearing high heels can help with constipation. After the hideous stunt by Kathy Griffin of holding up a bloody, fake head to simulate the decapitation of President Trump, there was some publicity about her being dropped as the spokeswoman of "Squatty Potty." While I do have to deal with occasional bouts of constipation, I was not aware of the healthful benefits of the Squatty Potty. After the Griffin gaffe, I checked out Squatty Potty, which claims to "...make your bad poops good and your good poops great."

The theory is that squatting to poop (as is the practice in many parts of the world which do not use elevated toilet seats) "reduces strain by relaxing the the puborectalis muscle and unkinking your colon. The Squatty Potty puts you into a natural squatting position for better elimination."

When I looked at the photo of the Squatty Potty in use, I realized that all it really did was raise the foot 4 to 6 inches and I determined I could achieve the same result with a pair of high heels. The solution was obvious. I could send $25 to $30 to Squatty Potty or I could use the money to buy another pair of heels. I thought this was an ingenious justification for the purchase of another pair of heels.

Many of us have wives who love us, but fear and worry about our dressing habits. Perhaps educating them about the health benefits of wearing high heels would help them see the benefits of having a crossdressing husband.

As noted above ,I do suffer from back pain from time to time. The doctor and the chiropractor have both provided me with back braces. For the most part they stay in the closet since I prefer girdles, corsets and shapewear. I find that I get more relief and certainly more enjoyment wearing my feminine shaping garments than the orthopedic braces. I also find that wearing a corset or girdle helps me cut down on my food consumption.

I suspect that there are other health benefits of dressing as a woman, but these are ones that work for me both for the physical benefits noted above and for helping my wife accept and have a more positive outlook towards my preferred style of attire.
