"Your Face Sounds Familiar" Observations

By Yamini Argo

Follow are my notes regarding some of the quirky things that happened on the Your Face Sounds Familiar television franchise.

The show has produced so many wonderful femulations over the last decade. The number of challenges the femulators have overcome is something all of us would have gone through. But the support they receive for the transformations is phenomenal. I like to look at the backstage makeup process and their physical and psychological aspects during the week of preparation.

Apart from bending the gender, many participants crossed racial boundaries. Few even successfully twerked and danced around muscular men. Not that everyone enjoys such performances; Romanian actor stated he felt violated when the male dancers touched him all over.

Almost all the contestants had to walk in high heels and almost none fell on their rears, thanks to the practice they have at the studio and also at home. A few girlfriends and wives have supported this endeavor by lending them shoes or simply encouraging them. One Spanish contestant was given the original dress worn by the singer to lend authenticity for the performance.

Makeup artists give them flawless appearance, which combined with their fine features can have unintentional outcomes. One such transformation found the Brazilian actor Victor Kley being mistaken for actress Meghan Fox. In the same show, another actor had to be censored by Instagram when he showed off his new assets.

The actors need not always wear the panties that go with their bras, but they don’t seem to mind. Few have flashed inadvertently, few intentionally. And they had to tuck their bits for the duration of the show. Some have showcased their bodies in revealing attires including bikinis.

Things get interesting when these men have personal relationships with the singers. These instances include when the son became his mother, brother became his sister and the times when boyfriends became their own ex-girlfriends. Fiancés have swapped roles and weirdly, brothers have danced as couples on two different shows.

Quite a few amusing things happened in the Bulgarian version this season. One contestant went on to kiss the judge deeply in the mode of the character he was in. Another actor had a mishap of his lifetime when the tube top slipped and revealed his fake breasts. He was described as a pornstar on national television.

The psychological aspect of this observation also questions how do they feel when they had become a sex symbol that they had wet dreams about in their teenage years. They learn dance moves to seduce the male dancers during the song and they also get voice training, which leaves them with sultry voices. These are potential tools they can use at any point in time with anyone. I'm not sure how many did venture outside the studio in full glam; at least once it was noted that Romanian singer Florin Ristei went home in between takes.

Overall, I'm glad this show exists and continues to provide some crossdressing entertainment for all of us.

P.S: I'd like to give a shout out to Vlad Nicola who has been amazing as a cosplayer and hostess. He’s got an appreciative girlfriend just like Zach Scuderi.

A Past Outreach

Yesterday, December 2, 2008, I did outreach for two Human Sexuality classes at Southern Connecticut State University. I did not go shopping as planned because I did not feel up to dealing with the Christmas shopping crowds that seemed to be out in full force yesterday.

As usual, I was the token crossdresser in the group doing outreach. The others were pre-op, post-op, and no-op male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals and a spouse. In the first class, there were six in the group. In the second class, there were seven. In the past, about four was the max. As a result, the biography portion of the class was longer and ate into the Q&A portion of the class. I enjoy the Q&A more than the bio portion of the class because I have heard all the bios before and although I’ve also heard many of the questions before, there are usually one or two new questions that make things interesting.

Anna Schildroth, the professor of the class scored big points with me. When I saw her for the first time yesterday, she asked, “Did you lose weight?”

I admitted that I lost eight pounds and I was happy she noticed. Then she added, “Well, it looks like you lost more than eight pounds!”

She made my day, but later she made my day again.

Before the second class, she came over to me and remarked that my legs were attracting a lot of attention. I asked her what she meant and she said that she was following me as I walked to the classroom and that she noticed a lot of people turning to notice my long legs. When she said that I blushed. (The accompanying photo reveals the revealing length of the hem of my dress yesterda.)

Speaking of long legs, I noticed a tall attractive female student file into the first class and pegged her as being six feet tall. I don’t recall her asking any questions during the Q&A portion of the class, but after the class was over, she asked, “Stana, how tall are you without heels?”

“Six two,” I replied.

“Me, too,” she said.

She was wearing flats, so I asked her if she wore heels. She said she does, but not currently because she just had knee surgery.

I was happy that here was a very tall girl, who was proud of her height and not afraid to wear heels. Good for her!

The questions asked of me were basically the same questions I have been asked at past outreaches with a few variations.

There was an amusing exchange with one student, who could not understand how I dressed in boy mode without people wondering about the telltale signs that indicated that I also dressed in girl mode. I did not understand what she was getting at, so she was more specific and said she was referring to the fact that since I get my nails done, don’t people wonder what’s with that. We all had a good laugh when I revealed that I use stick-on nails that come on and off in five minutes.

Another student asked me if I ever tried to stop crossdressing and I said that in the past, I was very guilty about crossdressing and tried to stop. I guess my Catholic upbringing had something to do with my guilt and I recalled the numerous times I planned to go to confession, confess my “sin,” and stop dressing. (I never had the nerve to make that confession.) I also mentioned how I had purged one time, but again took up crossdressing sooner or later.

Then I explained how as I grew older and a little wiser, I stopped feeling guilty when I realized that crossdressing was part of who I am and that I was going to be true to myself.

That was the last question of the day and I can’t think of a more appropriate way to end it.

Separated at Birth

In an email titled, “She looks just like you...,” Tami wrote, “when i first saw this short video i thought it was you!”

I was flattered and responded, “Separated at birth! LOL”

Tami retorted, “You should post her video and link to her site... see if others see the resemblance that I saw. She also seems to have a similar fashion sense, with pretty feminine clothing. She also has very feminine mannerisms - she’s someone all of us 'gurls' should strive to femulate!”

Do I resemble her, who BTW goes by the name “Deborah Boland”?

In my opinion, there is some resemblance especially when my hair is blond. But I should be so thin – Deborah probably weighs 70 pounds less than me!

I do agree that our fashion sense is similar – emphasizing pretty feminine clothing – and my mannerisms are comparable to hers. And absolutely yes, she is someone all of us should strive to femulate.

By the way, Deborah also has a YouTube page, which I now subscribe to.  Coincidentally, I also am subscribed to Schellea’s Fabulous 50s YouTube page. (Wonder if there is a Fabulous 70s YouTube page. If not, maybe I should start one!)

Very Comfortable

A reader commented, “You must feel very comfortable in your skin to be able to go into the situations you go into Stana.”

Yes, I am very comfortable.

I admit that before I take that first step out the door en femme, I am a little hesitant. Part of it is due to fear and part of it is due to awe.

“Fear” that something may go wrong. (Except for wardrobe and automobile malfunctions nothing has ever gone wrong.)

“Awe” that I am actually going out en femme and functioning as a woman in society.

I hesitate for only a moment or two, then push myself out the door.

As soon as I hear the click of my high heels on the floor, pavement, sidewalk, or wherever I take those first steps, I stop thinking about being en femme because at that point, I am femme.

Fantastic Film Femulations

Lee Pace in Soldier’s Girl
A few days ago, Mikki commented that Mehdi Dehbi in the film He’s My Girl“does the best job of female impersonation I’ve ever seen in a film. Unlike very many of these films, there’s no reason to go into ‘deliberate suspension of belief’ when perceiving Naim/Habiba as a female.”

I admit that my trans-radar did not sound off immediately when I first saw Mehdi Dehbi in that film and he should receive two bra cups up for his femulation. On the other hand, there are other film femulations that can compete with Mehdi Dehbi.

Lee Pace in Soldier’s GirlRomain Duris in The New Girlfriend and Matthias Schweighöfer in Woman in Love come to mind immediately and I am sure there are others that are just as good. (For a long time, I thought Tony Curtis’ femulation in Some Like It Hot was excellent until I discovered that his very female voice was dubbed in – by a man, Paul Frees.)

That’s just my opinion. So who do you think was an excellent film femulator? Let us know in the Comments below.

Everyday, I  receive email related to this blog. Most of it is positive and occasionally the email indicates that I hit it out of the ballpark like the following email from Faye.

Dear Stana,

May I tell you how much I have always enjoyed reading the Femulate website. Many a working day was brightened by the Someday Funnies or your down to earth approach to the ups and downs of being the women we are.

I did say how many’s working day had been brightened by reading Femulate, because after 30 years working for the same company, of which five years I worked as Faye and winning employee of the month and then employee of the year on two occasions over those five years I have finally retired.

I was presented with some lovely gifts by the other ladies, and from the head office in Hamburg I received a very generous monetary gift, this woman will be hitting the shops big time!!!

In contrast to my office wear, today my high heels remained in the wardrobe and business dresses on their hangers. I could not pull myself down to wearing leggings to do the top to bottom house clean that I would so often have to do on my day off ( the weekend ), hence the skirt and top!!, and on completing the bedrooms and bathroom I sat myself down and took the enclosed pic.

I am humble enough to know that if not for you and your own experiences in and out the office , I would never have achieved the acceptance and confidence I received from my Supervisor, HR and the other women in the office. Thank you Stana and thank you on behalf of every one of us whose heels have followed on the path created by yourself.

Though an ocean separates us, our sisterhood will always bring us together.

Faye xx

My Secrets

$

0

On Tuesday, Paula left the following comment: Love your style; please share your secrets with us and post your favorite on line shopping sites!

I had to think about my “secrets” because most of what I do style-wise comes naturally to me. I don't think about it, I just do it. And this is what I do.

Emphasize your assets.

My legs are my best assets, so I show them off by wearing short skirts and high heels. Heels make my legs even more shapely and short skirts reveal the results.

And there is some truth when I say, “My skirt’s not too short – my legs are too long!” I have resigned myself to the fact that the styles I prefer are going to be on the short side due to my leg length.

Dress for your body’s age, not your calendar age.

My arms are svelte enough for sleeveless sheaths and my legs are toned enough for short hemlines, so I show off what I've got (while I’ve still got it).

When in doubt, wear nude pumps.

Matched to my skin tone, they're a safe bet and they make my legs look even longer.

If it works, keep working with it.

When I find a style that looks good on me, I become a fan of that style and populate my wardrobe with more examples of that style. For example, I discovered that I look good in wrap dresses and as a result, I now own an assortment of wrap dresses.

On the other hand, keep an open mind. When you are shopping, try on styles that are not in your style book. You never know – it may look great on you. That’s how I discovered that jumpsuits belong in my style book.

Never buy a boring coat.

“Outerwear should never be an afterthought,” says Holmes & Yang co-designer Jeanne Yang. “So many people only see you in your coat—if you’re not wearing something great underneath your trench, they’ll never even know!”

With that thought in mind, fur coats are never boring. I own two full-length fur coats and a fur jacket. And I love animals, so all my furs are fake.

Own something in animal print.

Animal prints are timeless, racy enough, and always glamorous. I own a variety of animal print clothing and accessories.

Scarves are not for hiding.

Scarves are recommended for girls like us to hide our Adam’s apple. I don’t have much of an Adam’s apple, so I never wore scarves... until about five years ago, when I came across my dear departed Mother’s stash of scarves. One girls’ night out, I wore one of her scarves in her honor; I liked the look and began collecting and wearing my own stash of scarves.

Bigger jewelry is better jewelry.

Most girls like us are proportionally larger than cisgender girls. As a result, some of the jewelry designed for cis-girls is proportionally too small for us. So when I shop for jewelry, I shop for jewelry that is bigger rather than smaller.

A “keeper”
Thank you all who sent positive words regarding my wife’s health.

She has been in the hospital for eight days and is likely to be there for a few more days as the hospital staff tries to pinpoint the cause of her problem. The meds they are giving her seem to be working, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Hospital visiting hours are noon to 8 PM, so I spend mornings puttering around the house and afternoons visiting my wife. “Puttering” includes doing things I have been meaning to do for awhile. For example, going through my wardrobe and deciding what to get rid of – basically clothing that is too large as a result of shedding 35 pounds, as well as clothing that I purchased that are now in the “What was I thinking?” category.

Good news is while modeling outfits to determine whether they stay or go, I discovered that my knee problem has lessened so much so that I can wear high heels again!

My wife is improving and is now in a different facility for rehab. I am visiting her everyday while trying to fit my “normal” activities into the remaining free time. As a result, some activities have suffered including blogging and answering related emails.

To add to my wife’s issues, some new health issues for myself have arisen and I will be dealing with those issues in the coming days.

And on top of that, Photoshop has become unusable. Whenever I start it up, I get a message that the software is unable to contact the Adobe servers in order to confirm my Photoshop subscription. I have tried many things to correct the problem, but so far I have been unsuccessful. (I use Photoshop for much of my online work including this blog.)

So if I am scarce here online, you now know why.
