Girls will be boys and boys will be girls

Mr. Evan Rachel Wood at the Golden Globe Awards.

Miss Jonathan Holleman at Northwood High School's Switch Day.

Upon first glance you might just think Evan Wood was making a fashion statement, but as she explained, the move was more than just sartorial.

"This is my third nomination and I've been to the Globes six times, and I've worn a dress every time," Wood said. "And I love dresses, I'm not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure that young girls and women knew they aren't a requirement. And that you don't have to wear one if you don't want to, and to just be yourself because your worth is more than that." (source: The Huffington Post)

Similarly, Miss Jonathan is not trying to protest trousers. Rather, he represents a long tradition of mothers dressing up their sons as daughters for a variety of gender-bending scholastic events. Of course, some sons are more willing than others to forgo trousers for frocks. When those special boys slip on a bra or girdle for the first time, they know it is so right and will prefer female finery for the rest of their lives.

Miss Jonathan is just one of the pretty girls that Starla has uncovered in her search of online yearbooks, which resulted in over 200 new photos of male girls attending high school events en femme.

Those photos are now available on flickr, where you may view the new photos by opening one of the Yearbooks sets (A through Z). There you will find the newest uploads at the end/bottom of the set. (The oldest uploads appear at the beginning/top of the set.) The contents of the Yearbook A through Z sets are organized according to school name, for example, the photos from Sacred Heart High School would be in the Yearbooks S set.

By the way, if you participated in your school's womanless beauty pageant or attended some other school activity en femme, I would love to post your photos along with any description you would like to provide.

The First 100 Days Resistance Agenda

$

By Robert Reich

Trump’s First 100 Day agenda includes repealing environmental regulations, Obamacare, and the Dodd-Frank Act, giving the rich and big corporations a huge tax cut, and putting in place a cabinet that doesn’t believe in the Voting Rights Act or public schools or Medicare or the Fair Housing Act.

Our 100 days of resistance begins a sustained and powerful opposition. Here’s what you can do (it will take about an hour of your time each day):

1. Get your senators and representatives to pledge to oppose Trump’s agenda. Reject his nominees, prolong the process of approving them, draw out hearings on legislation. Call your senator and your representative and don’t stop calling.

2. March and demonstrate. The Women’s March on Washington will be the day after the Inauguration. There should be “sister” marches around the country. And then monthly marches against hate. Keep the momentum alive and keep the message going.

3. Make your city and state sanctuaries that won’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities in deporting undocumented immigrants, especially people who have been here since they were very young.

4. Boycott all Trump products, real estate, hotels, resorts, everything. And then boycott all stores (like Nordstrom) that carry merchandise from Trump family brands.

5. Write letters to the editor of your newspaper and op-eds, with a steady flow of arguments about the fallacies and dangers of Trump’s First 100 Day policies and initiatives.

6. Contribute to social media with up-to-date daily bulletins on what Trump is up to, and actions in your region in opposition.

7. Contribute to the most effective opposition groups. The American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Economic Policy Institute, Inequality Media, MoveOn, and others.

8. Make the resistance visible with bumper stickers, lapel pins, wrist bands.

9. Push progressive causes at your state and local level – environmental reform, progressive taxes, a higher minimum wage, ending gerrymandering, stopping mass incarceration. Make your state a model of what the federal government should do.

10. Start a move in your state to abolish the electoral college by committing your state’s electors to vote for the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

11. Reach out to independents and even Trump supporters who agree with this agenda, and get them involved.

12. Your idea goes here. Meet with family and friends this weekend, and decide what you’ll contribute.

The First 100 Days Resistance Agenda. An hour a day. Send a powerful message. We aren’t going away.

Weighty Matters

Pricilla wrote, "Maybe you can share your dieting methods which enabled you to loose that weight? What is your final goal?"

I have lost 14 pounds so far. My goal is to lose 9 more pounds  25 total.

Three-fifths of the way to my goal, I noticed my face is thinner, my feet no longer hurt (yes, my toes are skinnier), my high heels are more comfortable for a longer period of time and my girdle is not killing me as soon as it did when I was 14 pounds heavier, in fact, the last few times out, my foundation garments were no problem at all.

I started this diet in early November. On the eve of the holidays, I had lost about a dozen pounds. It was difficult to maintain that loss through the holidays, but I managed.

New Year's weekend, I caught a stomach flu and when it was all over, I lost a few more pounds! I don't recommend losing weight by catching a stomach flu, but as they say, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

My dieting method is not ground-breaking. Cut out sweets, reduce my bread intake and don't eat in between meals. I seldom drink alcoholic beverages, so for me, there is no gain in avoiding booze. On weekends, I often eat only two meals instead of three. And I walk at least one mile per day.

And so it goes.

Pulling Off Body-Con at Any Age

Best shapewear for body-con dresses. The three checked examples are the
best choices for most femulators. (Image source: www.lingerieaddict.com)

A lot of girls like us favor very short hemlines and very high heels. We also favor body-conscious or body-con clothing—skintight clothing that emphasizes the contours of the body. (I plead guilty of all three trans trends.)

Celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger divulges her fashion expertise on body-con in a recent installment of Who What Wear's "Ask a Stylist" column.

"Hot topic of the week? Body-con clothing and whether there's a right age to give up the figure-forming pieces. I have a simple approach to body-con, and it comes down to these three rules. 1) Only wear something if you feel comfortable. 2) Pay attention to the silhouette. And 3) Never forget about shapewear. While I always remind my clients and friends of these guidelines, the most important thing to keep in mind is to know your body and acknowledge when you don't feel comfortable—end of story."

Well, that's not actually the end of the story, so please read the rest of Ms. Erlanger's story here.

Peaches reminded me that I have not updated my Famous Females of Height page in awhile (almost two years). In case you just tuned in, you may wonder how my Famous Females of Height list relates to the topic of this blog. Here is a quick explanation:

The average female is not as tall as the average femulator. That height discrepancy might prevent some femulators from going out in public en femme because they feel that they are too tall to pass as a female.

The purpose of my Famous Females of Height list is to show that there really are a lot of tall genetic women out there and therefore, height should not be a factor that prevents femulators from going out en femme.

Attending the 2014 True Colors Conference
This spring, I will attend and present at two trans-related conferences this spring.

True Colors Conference on March 17 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT.

Transgender Lives Conference on April 29 at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, CT.

True Colors is a two-day conference where thousands of LGBT youths and their supporters from throughout the Northeast (and beyond) meet to attend what is essentially a GLBT youth convention. The conference is put together by True Colors, a non-profit organization that works with other social service agencies, schools, organizations, and within communities to ensure that the needs of sexual and gender minority youth are both recognized and competently met.

Transgender Lives is a one-day event  is for service providers, medical and legal professionals, the trans and gender non-conforming community, allies and all those interested in the  issues facing the trans and gender non-conforming communities. The event is brought about by Connecticut TransAdvocacy Coalition (CTAC), a coalition and grassroots oriented organization comprised of individuals and organizations dedicated to the advancement and attainment of full human rights for all trans and gender non-conforming people in every aspect of society.

"Makeup Basics for Trans Females" is the title of my presentation and is described, as follows: Putting on your face can be a cosmetic calamity if you don't have a roadmap. This workshop provides guidance and tips for the transgender female on how to successfully navigate the world of cosmetics so that she can start looking like the female she really is.

I have presented at Transgender Lives once before and at True Colors five previous times and  and I look forward to doing so again.

I was so impressed with this lady's ability to run in heels that I did not notice the gender-angle of the advertisement until I revisited it over the weekend. The lady assumed that the party they were attending was for a girl named "Taylor," when in fact, it was a party for a boy named "Taylor."

Taylor is a unisex name, but considering the popularity of singer Taylor Swift, the error is understandable.

Choices

$
0
0

We make choices everyday.

(Boxers, briefs, or panties? Yogurt or bagel? Bra or bra-less? Regular or decaf?)

Some choices are more important than others and some have long-term ramifications.

(Should I be a doctor, a lawyer or a fire chief? Should I marry her, him or it?)

Sometimes our choices backfire. Sometimes our choices are just plain wrong and we suffer the consequences, but we are still free to choose whatever we want.

So why can't we choose our gender?

Despite all the scientific evidence to the contrary, the anti-transgender crowd claims that transgender folks choose to be transgender just like the anti-gay crowd claims that gay folks choose to be gay. And according to those crowds, making those choices is wrong.

I am naturally feminine. My feminine speech and mannerisms are a bad fit in boy mode, but in girl mode, they are a perfect fit.

I could man up and never wear a dress again, but I chose not to do male drag. So, yes, I made a choice to live authentically and not fit in with the boys.

But what if I was not transgender?

What if I was a guy with no gender issues, who carefully weighed all the options and decided that living my life as a woman was preferable to living my life as a man. And as a result, I chose to live my life as a woman.

What's wrong with that?

I say, "Absolutely nothing."

It is just another choice. Admittedly, it is an big choice with a lot of long-term ramifications, but humans make important choices everyday. That's why God gave us intelligence and free will ― so that we can make choices ― like choosing our gender.

Growing up, Mary was a weekly highlight, first on The Dick Van Dyke Show and later, on her own show. She was pretty, smart, stylish, spunky and just lovely... just like I wanted to be when I grew up.

I am very saddened by her death.

God bless you, Mary.

Dancing

I told this story before, but I recently recalled a part of the story that I neglected to pass along before.

One of my first girly moments was related to the ballet. When I was 5-years-old, my mother enrolled my younger sister and I in a dancing school. My class had about 15 girls and one other boy. Once a week, we practiced tap and ballet for an hour under the tutelage of young female instructors.

I have no memory why my mother enrolled us at dancing school. I could understand enrolling my sister, but why did she immerse me, her only son, in that world of femininity? It certainly was not going to make a man out of me. Maybe she detected the girl in me and thought that I would enjoy participating in such a girly activity.

If that was her plan, she was correct. I enjoyed every minute of it!

I loved learning dance and being treated like the other girls. The young instructors became my role models. I even recall dreaming (both day-dreaming and sleep-dreaming) about dancing as a ballerina, wearing a pink leotard, tutu, ballet shoes, and makeup with my long blond hair put up in a pony-tail.

In the spring, we had a dance recital. It was held at the Loew's Poli Palace theater in Waterbury. "Registered as a National Historic treasure, the Palace's elegant lobbies, crystal chandeliers, gold detailing, almost 3,500 seat capacity auditorium, along with its Broadway-sized stage, make this the largest seating capacity theater of its kind in all of New England" when it was built in 1922 (Source: Cinema Treasures).

So my first (and last) appearance on stage was big time!

Now here's the part I recently recalled...

Since we were appearing on stage, we had to wear makeup. My mother was my makeup lady, but she knew bupkis about stage makeup. So when she applied our makeup, she made my face up just like my sister's face – lipstick, rouge, eyebrow pencil, eye shadow, mascara – the works! Although I was wearing a boy's costume, I had the face of a girl!

Due to tight family finances, we only took dance classes for one year, but that one year immersion in femininity left a life-long impression on this girl.

Mrs. Cunberg

I found an interesting item on eBay about ten years ago. It is a photo of a crossdressed man. Although it is a nice colorized photo, it is the accompanying description that I found very interesting.

Here it is unedited:

"THIS IS ACTUALLY MY GRANDFATHER,HE WAS SO GOOD AT DRESSING LIKE A WOMAN THAT WHEN HE TOOK MY FATHER TO SCHOOL ALL HIS CLASSMATES WOULD GREET HIM AS MRS,CUNBERG,IM SHOCKED TO FIND PICTURE AS IT WAS HIDDEN VERY WELL IN ATTIC,MY FATHER WAS NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT BUT SAID HE WAS A WONDERFULL MAN,"

Doing the math, I figure that Mrs. Cunberg was out and about in the early 20th Century. Her hairdo and clothing indicate that her photo may be from the 1920's, which was an era of more liberal thinking, especially in regards to non-traditional gender roles.

So it was a good time for Mrs. C to be open about her gender. She could have been a role model for the folks epitomized in the popular song of that era "Masculine Women, Feminine Men."

Dressing Like a Woman

$
0
0
Today, women seldom wear skirts or a dresses. Instead, they wear tops with a bifurcated garment – slacks, trousers, jeans, etc.

Although my spouse owns skirts and dresses, I can't remember the last time she wore one. Similar story with my 30-something daughter; she owns a few skirts and dresses, but I can't recall her wearing one. Fact is the "man" of the house owns more skirts and dresses than the women of the house.

Skirts and dresses are as scarce at work as they are at home.

There are a half dozen women in my workplace and they seldom wear skirted garments. Working along side 60 guys in an engineering environment may encourage their daily wear, but just next door is a company that employs about 50 women in an office environment and they also prefer slacks, trousers and jeans. The only exception are two transwomen, who usually wear skirts or dresses (and heels) whenever I see them.

And so it goes, I dress like a woman when I am in boy mode and I dress like a transwoman when I am in girl mode.
